Giant killers
England travel to Basel ahead of Tuesday night’s match against the giant killers of European football looking to gain three points to secure top spot in the early running for Euro 2012 qualification.
Ottmar Hitzfeld's men overcame eventual champions Spain 1-0 in their opening fixture of the 2010 World Cup, after topping their qualification group, and with a manager matching the CV of Fabio Capello the Swiss will attempt to disrupt the English and claim victory.
The Swiss benefit from a strong defence and on organised midfield that can both create and destroy. They have in their ranks a number of seasoned professionals of the European club game and their excellent levels of organisation can frustrate even the most creative of sides — as Spain found out in June.
Recovering pride
England’s main aim for the first two matches of qualification was to put to bed the disappointment of the World Cup campaign and regain some pride. With the majority of the press hunting for the dismissal of manager Capello, his team will have to get behind him on Tuesday night to ensure that it will be six points from six come Wednesday morning
England won the match 3 / 1

  1. After the impressive 4-0 demolition of Bulgaria on Friday night, England should line-up quite similarly to how they started that game. Jermain Defoe, hat-trick hero on Friday, will be keen to prove that his goalscoring exploits can continue throughout the qualifying campaign.
His strike partner, Wayne Rooney, may miss out however, due to allegations concerning his private life. It remains to be seen whether the Manchester United forward is in the right frame of mind to play football.

  2. Switzerland are missing former Arsenal centre-back Phillipe Senderos through injury, with Cesena defender Steve von Bergen expected to fill the gap left by the recent Fulham signing.
Record goal scorer Alexander Frei should start just off the Bayer Leverkusen forward Eren Derdiyok, while former Manchester City midfielder Gelson Fernandes will look to frustrate Steven Gerrard and Gareth Barry. Goalkeeper Diego Benaglio is likely to miss out thanks to the arrival of his first child.
Possible Team: Wolfli; Lichtsteiner, Grichting, von Bergen, Ziegler; Barnetta, Fernandes, Inler, Padalino; Frei, Derdiyok.

  3. England, already without first-choice centre-back pairing of Terry and Ferdinand, will have to cope with the loss of Tottenham defender Michael Dawson who will be out for around eight weeks. In his place will likely be Gary Cahill of Bolton, who replaced the injured man on Friday, although Matthew Upson will hope to be involved.
Frank Lampard also misses out and, should Wayne Rooney be perceived to be in the wrong frame of mind, Capello may stick with a 4-4-2 or add an extra man in midfield.
Possible Team: Hart; Johnson, Cahill, Jagielka, Cole; Walcott, Gerrard, Barry, Milner; Rooney, Defoe.
