Roma vs Shakhtar Highlights 2-3 Goals

Roma vs Shakhtar Player Ratings

We rate the players in the entertaining Champions League round-of-16 game between Roma and Shakhtar Donetsk which the visitors won 3-2.
Roma
Doni  - 6
Was let down by his defenders and sheer blind luck. Generally assured.
Nicolas Burdisso - 3
Missed a sitter early on from close range and failed to close down Shakhtar's forwards quickly enough.
Philippe Mexes - 5
Looked more comfortable than Burdisso, but struggled to track Luiz Adriano as the striker drew him all across the pitch.
John Arne Riise (off 46') - 4
Another one who struggled to cope with the Brazilians present in the Ukrainian outfit - especially Douglas Costa who was in sensational form. Did not offer a lot going forward.
Marco Cassetti - 6
Better than Riise and supported his frontmen ably. Send the Shakhtar defence into a tizzy a couple of times with some great crosses.
Daniele de Rossi - 7
Unfortunate to deflect the ball into his own net. Dusted himself up and led a great Roma rearguard in the second-half in which they refused to let Shakhtar settle.
Jeremy Menez - 7.5
His goal was stupendous. A beautiful curling strike that nestled in the top corner. Menez was a constant threat - even when Roma were being pummelled by Shakhtar.
Simone Perrotta - 6.5
It's not clear whether Perrotta will be awarded Roma's opening goal, but the midfielder was always in the thick of action and trying his best to get his side moving forward.
Rodrigo Taddei - 5
Combined well with Cassetti and led Roma's attacks frequently. Was let down by his final touch too often though.
Francesco Totti - 6
There were some sublime flashes of brilliance by the captain but he just could not do is consistently enough to cause major damage.
Mirko Vucinic (off 69') - 4
Had a couple of great chances to get his team level but snatched at his shots. Poor outing.
Subs
Marco Borriello (on 69') - 3
Completely ineffective.
Paolo Castellini (on 46') - 6.5
Far better than Riise and Roma immediately looked more threatening from the left once he came on.
Shakhtar
Andriy Pyatov - 6
Poor positioning saw Roma take the lead after 28 minutes. Luckily for Shakhtar, it didn't prove to be too costly.
Dmytro Chigrynskiy - 7
The former Barcelona man was up against the experienced Totti and he performed his duties with ease.
Yaroslav Rakitskiy - 7
Dealt with Vucinic relatively easily and he can be seen throwing himself at every shot from the Roma players.
Razvan Dinca Rat - 6
He was dreaming when he tapped in the ball for Roma's first goal. What was he thinking?
Darijo Srna - 6
The Croatian full back did an awesome job going forward, but defensively very unstable.
Henrik Mkhitaryan - 6
Was a decent anchorman providing cover for the defenders. Nothing too fancy in his game.
Tomas Hubschman - 6
Not much to do, except to protect the three precious away goals at all cost.
Willian - 7.5
Shakhtar looked good going forward and he is one of the players who make the side so good to watch
Douglas Costa (off 66') - 8
In the second goal, Shakhtar started deep in their own half before he finished off a fine move with a superb strike, giving Doni no chance.
Luiz Adriano - 8
Looked threatening from set pieces and was not afraid to work hard for the team. His goal just before half time was a fine finish which resulted from a slip up from Riise. He got himself booked unnecessarily for time wasting which could prove costly if Shakhtar were to progress in the competition.
Jadson - 7
A deflected shot from Jadson and Shakhtar were back in it seconds after conceding a goal! His second half performance was not as colourful as his first though.
Subs
Eduardo (66' on) - 6
Did not have as big an impact on the match unlike the previous few outings.
Vitaliy Vitsenets (off 79')
N/A
Alex Teixeira (off 85')
N/A
