Sixty-six days after Johannesburg staged a Castilian carnival, it was time for Madrid to savour the World Cup final all over again. Well, almost: this Real Madrid team, harbouring five members of the all-conquering national side, confronted four fully-fledged Oranje among their Ajax opponents – and just as in South Africa, the outcome was a decisive victory for the Spanish.
Rafael Nadal was the one to bring luck to his beloved Real. The freshly-anointed US Open champion has been coming to the Bernabeu since he was old enough to swing a tennis racket and on Wednesday night, before kick-off, he arrived from New York to receive a rousing salute from all sides of this magnificent stadium.
